Cast Iron Pipe Leaks and Backups in Cape Coral, FL

Many 1970s and 1980s Cape Coral homes still drain through original cast iron, and after decades it cracks and leaks wastewater out of sight. Your plumber repairs the line; we clean up and dry what it damaged.

Signs Your Cast Iron Drains Are Failing

Old metal pipes and a valve against a concrete wall
  • Sewer smell in a bathroom with no clog, often strongest near the tub, toilet or floor
  • Water or stains under the tub, or damp drywall on the other side of a bathroom wall
  • Slow drains in more than one fixture at the same time
  • Gurgling in toilets and drains when other fixtures run
  • Backups that keep coming back after the line was cleared
  • Damp grout or a wet spot on the floor near a bathroom or kitchen with no visible source
  • Small flies around drains that never go away

How Cast Iron Fails

Cast iron does not fail all at once. Corrosion builds up inside the pipe and narrows it, which causes slow drains and clogs. Along the bottom of horizontal runs, wastewater can wear a channel until the pipe splits open, a problem plumbers call channel rot. Joints loosen, cracks form, and tree roots find their way in. Because these lines run under the slab and inside walls, the leak usually soaks the soil, the slab and the bottom of nearby walls long before anyone sees water.

How We Clean Up Cast Iron Leak Damage

Leaks from drain lines carry wastewater, so they are treated as contaminated, not as clean-water leaks. We contain the area, remove wet porous materials such as carpet pad, baseboards and the bottom of soaked drywall, clean and disinfect the framing and slab, and dry everything with dehumidifiers and daily readings. When a plumber has to open the floor to reach the pipe, we can dry and protect the area before and after.

Buying or Selling an Older Cape Coral Home?

Cast iron drains are one of the most common issues found in home inspections of older Florida homes, and some insurers ask about plumbing age. If an inspection flags cast iron, a plumber's camera inspection shows the real condition. If it shows past leaks, our hidden leak and moisture inspection shows whether walls and floors are still wet.

Does Insurance Cover Cast Iron Pipes in Florida?

Usually not the pipe. Replacing old cast iron is generally treated as maintenance or wear. Sudden water damage caused by a cast iron failure may be covered, and some policies help with the cost of opening the floor to reach the pipe. Damage from a slow leak that went on for a long time is often excluded. Read your policy and report damage promptly. See answers on cast iron claims. This is general information, not insurance advice.

Cast Iron Pipe Questions

Why do I smell sewer in my bathroom when there is no clog?

In an older home, a cracked or corroded cast iron drain line, a dried-out drain trap or a failed toilet seal can all let sewer gas in. A plumber's camera inspection finds a cracked line.

Why is water leaking under my tub?

Common causes are a failed tub drain, an overflow gasket, or a cracked cast iron drain under the tub. Stop using the tub and call (239) 356-5803 so the wet floor and walls can be dried.

Does insurance cover cast iron pipes in Florida?

The pipe replacement usually is not covered. Sudden water damage from the failure may be, depending on your policy.

Is water from a cast iron leak dangerous?

It is wastewater, so treat it as contaminated: keep children and pets away and do not clean it up without protective gear.
